Introduction

the old building of Department of DentistryThe NTU Department of Dentistry was the former dental unit of the Taipei Imperial University affiliated hospital founded by the Japanese. After World War II, Taipei Imperial University was converted to National Taiwan University (NTU), and its affiliated hospital subsequently became National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). The first chairman of the School of Dentistry was Dr. Shui Kuo, who also served as the professor of dental science in the medical college. During the following 50 years, attending physicians have increased from the original 1 to 40, and outpatient dental treatment chairs have increased from 6 to 108. Our teaching quality, dental services, and research in dental science have all achieved a marked progress.

The NTU Department of Dentistry has made every effort to serve the general public and to promote education since our establishment. Our achievements in these works are as follows:

  1. Dental treatment team: free of charge treatments in Beimen Township in Tainan County, blackfoot disease area in Budai Township in Chiayi County, and 921 disaster area in Nantou County; free of charge treatments and oral hygiene education in Taitung County, Jianshih Township and Wufong Township in Hsinchu County, and Shihding Township in Taipei County.
  2. Education and promotion of oral hygiene in children by visiting childcare facilities in different areas of Taiwan.
  3. Production of various types of oral hygiene promotion handouts, brochures, videos and articles, educating the general public with oral hygiene and caries prevention concepts, encouraging early treatment and improving the quality of life for middle aged and elderly population.
  4. Organization of continuing education courses for dentists each year, raising the standards of dentists and dental treatments in our country.
  5. Collaboration between dental healthcare companies and corporations in developing and evaluating efficiency and safety of oral healthcare products.
  6. Current collaborations with the NTU School of Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Medical Technology in genetic research and tissue engineering.
  7. Establishment of the first outpatient clinic for handicapped patients by the Taiwanese Department of Health.
  8. Establishment of special clinic for betel nut related oral cancer for its prevention, examination, diagnosis and treatment.

Goals

We wish to use our outstanding heritage to educate elite students and staff to conduct advanced research and provide high quality treatments. We also wish to raise the standards of dental education, research, and treatment quality to serve the general public and eventually become the largest university affiliated dental department in Asia. Our core values lie in health, integrity, innovation, and teamwork.

Aims

  1. Incorporate science, life sciences, and technical science into dental courses to educate future dentists with solid biological knowledge and precise manual skills.
  2. Collaborate with various specialist training centers set up by the Graduate Institute of Clinical Dentistry to provide high quality, specialized treatments.
  3. Enhance and upgrade the education of basic medical science and clinical dentistry.
  4. Establish a national oral disease prevention and education center along with our 雲林 campus in a national investigation of dental public health epidemiology and geriatric dental problems, providing the government with strategies regarding oral preventive care for the general public.
  5. Collaborate with Hsinchu Biomedical Science Park in developing oral biomedical technologies, combining the efforts of research staff and dentists in producing improved biomaterials for dental use. Furthermore, conduct thorough research in oral hard tissue and oral cancer molecular biology and genetics for early diagnosis and treatment, as well as enhancing our country’s dental material industry.
  6. Establish a dental clinical educational training center to provide continuing education courses for dentists as well as different types of dental staff and assistants.
